MEMO: Findings on reconciliation and tariffs
On 04.28 - 04.29 Center Aisle surveyed 13,413 Americans nationwide about their views on House Republicans and reconciliation and tariff messages. We evaluated the impact of 250 messages on the reconciliation bill and tariffs. Our research finds that House Republicans' budget reconciliation plans to cut core safety net programs are extremely unpopular and that the most effective messages are those that highlight how increasing the national debt will further threaten social security and medicare.
Moderates have done an effective job hitting cuts to Medicaid and other programs, and how those cuts are paid for by tax cuts for the rich. However, this leaves the massive increase in the debt on the table. If Moderates can message effectively on the debt increase, they can increase the backlash the far right faces if they pass debt expanding tax cuts for the rich. Our research confirms that attacks on Cuts to Medicaid and Food Stamps perform well, however, the most effective messages focused on how adding trillions to the debt risks the future of Social Security and Medicare.
